Colorful Colorado

My current home base, and the place where I discovered the real outdoors. I started off hiking Colorado 14ers (mountains greater than 14,000 ft elevation), but soon found that bagging the biggest peaks in Colorado wasn't as important to me as just spending time in the Wilderness. Over the past 15 years, I've tried to spend time discovering all that Colorado has to offer, and feel like I've barely scratched the surface. This is a collection of random shots I've taken as we've explored this great state.

Near our backcountry campsite, Oneea and I found this nice little spot to share a soapy glass of wine and watch the trout navigate the creek.

We camped at this gorgeous lake for 2 nights, exploring the surrounding area, which is equally as beautiful.

My friend Jason joined me on this midnight start time adventure, so that we could be at the Loch just before sunrise. The weather was crazy that morning with lots of rain and wind. We decided to go anyways, and were rewarded with roughly 10 seconds of some of most amazing light I've ever witnessed.

A short 3.5 mile hike brings you to this incredible lake located in southwestern Colorado. I woke up early for this one...thankful I did.

  • Taken from Blue Lake Pass, which was 2.5 miles from our campsite. From the pass, you can see Upper and Middle Blue Lake. Dallas Peak and some of the more remote mountains of the Sneffels Wilderness Area can be seen beyond.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO

One of the many lonely dunes that I walked past on my way up to the ridgeline. These dunes are constantly changing from the wind...The lines created from the wind are spectacular, and I realized when looking at this dune that I could spend days just wandering through this area.

Lower Blue Lake with Mt. Sneffels in the background. Taken at the stream near our campsite. It's not common to see lakes this color in Colorado....this area felt a lot more like BC with the jagged peaks and glacial colored lakes.

Trico Peak from Red Mountain Pass, CO

Trico Peak near Red Mountain Pass. We actually attempted to summit this mountain the day after taking this picture. The weather was nowhere like this day, and we were soon trapped in a major blizzard. After going a quarter of the way up the hill, we learned how to dig snow caves. After some very cold discussions with our guide, we decided to head back down as the weather was getting worse by the second. Still a great experience and got to snap a few pictures in good weather during our training hike like this one.
