Winter Weekend Trip to Lake Louise

We took a quick 48 hour weekend trip down the highway from Edmonton to visit the beautiful mountain town of Lake Louise. It was a place I've always wanted to visit and I can tell you that the Canadian Rockies do not disappoint. They are hands down the most rugged mountains I have seen. We didn't have much time, but still were able to explore a bit by taking a drive up the highway towards Jasper. It was incredibly cold (-45 C) so we didn't get to explore as much as we had hoped, but we made the best of it and enjoyed all of the things in Canada that we've been missing since our time in Vancouver. We'll definitely be making another trip up here in the Summer to enjoy all the area has to offer.

  • This is the view from our hotel....it's truly amazing. The hotel sits right on the shore of Lake Louise, and just behind the lake looms the massive Mt. Victoria and Victoria glacier.

  • After driving for a few hours along the Columbia Icefields highway, we turned around at this point...We were starting to feel pretty far out there, and given we didn't have a very reliable rental car and it was -45°C outside, we decided it was time to turn back towards the hotel.

  • The world famous viewpoint of Peyto Lake. I've seen this picture many times in the Summer, but haven't seen many pics from the Winter. This was actually a tough spot to get to because the road was closed for the season, so I had to hike up from the highway. Wasn't too long, but considering how cold it was, and how underdressed I was, I felt a bit out of my element and was very happy to finally arrive at the viewpoint.

  • The Num-Ti-Jah lodge along the highway near Bow Lake. We stopped here to warm up and see if they might have some coffee or hot chocolate. We ended up staying for an hour, chatting with the InnKeeper, sitting by the fire, and looking through their gift shop. It's a great little spot, and we had it all to ourselves. I'm sure if we come back in the Summer, it would be a much different experience as this area sees many, many tourists.

  • Didn't see many people along this highway, so it was very easy to just stop in the middle of the road, get out, set up the tripod and take a picture. We stayed in Lake Louise at the Fairmont Chateau, and although we were only 35km away, we felt worlds away since nobody was out sightseeing due to the weather conditions.

  • Taken while driving right through our windshield. Along this highway, you are constantly getting views such as this and now I know why this drive is considered one of the most scenic in the world.

  • Little Alex joined us on this adventure, and was happy to be back in his homeland of Canada. We had to limit his exposure outside because it was so cold, and luckily we had plenty of blankets to keep him nice and warm.

  • On the way back home, we stopped off along the highway so I could take a quick picture of Mt Rundle near Banff, AB. This is probably the most photographed mountain in the area, and is a symbol for the Canadian Rockies. The morning clouds hadn't quite lifted yet, which added a nice effect when combined with the morning sunshine.
