Sneffels Wilderness Area

A great weekend getaway to the San Juan Mountains with Oneea and the Halstead's. It was a perfect weekend, complete with campfires (compliments of Andrew's wood smashing), amazing campsites, "Bob", red wine, cold beer, g'ang (gin / tang named after gma jane), and a few hikes near Mt Sneffels. We vowed this would be the first of many trips....Thanks Andrew and Sarah for joining us and already looking forward to the next trip!

  • Lower Blue Lake with Mt. Sneffels in the background. Taken at the stream near our campsite. It's not common to see lakes this color in Colorado....this area felt a lot more like BC with the jagged peaks and glacial colored lakes.

  • Andrew stopping to smell the flowers.....actually, we just stopped to take a break because we were going straight up. Didn't really realize how abundant the wildflowers were until I took this picture and then realized that we were sitting in a carpet of wildflowers!

  • Mt Sneffels at last sunlight. Andrew and I hiked up the hillside above our campsite to find wildflowers everywhere (see next picture) and a very strong wind. We checked out the surroundings, took a few pictures, and watched my camera bag literally blow off the side of the hill and roll a long ways down. I lost a battery, but was able to recover everything else!

  • Late morning at Upper Blue Lake....amazing to me how green it was for the middle of August. Must be all the rain that we've had this Summer.

  • Thought this mountainside resembled some of the marshmallows we cooked....almost seems like it's slowly melting away.

  • Taken from Blue Lake Pass, which was 2.5 miles from our campsite. From the pass, you can see Upper and Middle Blue Lake. Dallas Peak and some of the more remote mountains of the Sneffels Wilderness Area can be seen beyond.

  • Andrew at the top of Blue Lake Pass. Seeing the sign from below was a welcome sight as it felt like the climb up would never end. From the pass, you could look down into Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray. We also watched several hikers heading up towards the summit of Mt Sneffels. We didn't attempt the summit because we were running low on time and still had to hike back to the car and make the 6 hour drive back to Denver.

  • The Crew....Was great for both Oneea and I to get away from it all for the weekend (thanks Nanna for watching the boys) and really good to catch up with Andrew and get to know Sarah. Now it's time to start planning next Summer's trip.
